If You're Cited In One, Are You Cited By All?
Being cited by one AI tool doesn't mean you're cited by the others. We checked all 2,710 Ford dealer websites in the US across six AI engines. About three in 10 were cited by all six. One in 10 was cited by none.
The clearest predictor of how many engines cite a store was the same one we keep finding: organic search reach. Stores that already earn search traffic show up across AI search. Stores that don't, mostly don't.
How We Measured It
Sample: the same 2,710 Ford dealer websites from our OEM Deep Dive. We started with every location in Ford's dealer locator on Oct. 12, 2026, then removed dealers with no website, satellite locations that share a website, and sites whose live address we couldn't confirm.
Engines: Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, and ChatGPT. Ahrefs supplied US citation counts for each one in October 2026.
How to read it: Ahrefs samples each engine differently. AI Overviews are counted from tracked Google searches. The other five are counted from questions Ahrefs asks them. Compare patterns, not exact totals, and treat the results as a snapshot.
Finding #1: Each AI Plays by Its Own Rules
Every engine cites a different share of Ford dealers.

32% of Ford dealers were cited by all six engines. 10% were cited by none. For CDJR dealers, those numbers were 20% and 15%.
Depth varies too. Among Ford dealers cited by AI Overviews, the typical store had five different pages cited. For ChatGPT, the typical store had two.
What this means for you: Checking one tool doesn't tell you where you stand across all of them. And the more pages you have that answer real shopper questions, the more ways each engine has to cite you.
Finding #2: Google's 3 AIs Stick Together, and Perplexity Joins Them
AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Gemini are all Google products. AI Overviews and AI Mode are built into Google Search, and Gemini can use it too. So we checked how closely each pair of engines agrees on which Ford dealers to cite.
We used a Spearman correlation, where 1 means perfect agreement and 0 means none. Rough guide: 0.7 and up is strong, 0.4 to 0.7 is moderate, and below 0.4 is weak.
Engine pair | Agreement |
AI Mode and Gemini | 0.78 |
AI Overviews and AI Mode | 0.74 |
AI Overviews and Gemini | 0.73 |
Google's 3 AIs and Perplexity | 0.69 to 0.74 |
Google's 3 AIs and Copilot | 0.53 to 0.63 |
Google's 3 AIs and ChatGPT | 0.46 to 0.56 |
Perplexity isn't a Google product, but for Ford dealers it agrees with Google's AIs almost as closely as they agree with each other.
We also compared each engine's citations with the number of searches each dealer ranks for in Google:
AI engine | Tracking of Google rankings |
Google AI Overviews | 0.88 |
Google AI Mode | 0.72 |
Perplexity | 0.72 |
Gemini | 0.71 |
Microsoft Copilot | 0.59 |
ChatGPT | 0.53 |
ChatGPT's lower score is partly because 45% of Ford dealers had no ChatGPT citations at all.
What this means for you: Strong Google rankings carry across most of AI search. Four of the six engines track Google rankings closely. ChatGPT and Copilot follow them least, and they're the ones to watch.
Finding #3: Your Search Reach Decides How Many AIs Know You
We split the 2,710 dealers into four equal groups by estimated monthly organic search visits, from Ahrefs. These estimates usually run lower than a store's own analytics.

Here's the same view, engine by engine:

The gap is widest outside AI Overviews and Perplexity. In the lowest group, AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot, and ChatGPT each cited 22% of stores or fewer. In the highest group, every engine cited about 85% or more.
The page count tells the same story. Every Ford store with 20 or more pages earning search traffic is cited by at least one engine. Among stores with 30 or more, 71% are cited by all six.
One caution: high-traffic stores tend to be larger, have more pages, and sit in bigger markets.
The data shows these things move together. It doesn't show that one causes the other.
What this means for you: Growing organic search traffic is the same work that puts your store in front of more AI engines. Ford stores estimated at under 212 monthly search visits are cited by fewer than two engines on average.
What We Are Not Claiming
A few limits, stated plainly.
Correlation, not a controlled test. Search reach and AI citations may both come from the same thing: a useful, well-built site.
AI results move. This data reflects October 2026.
ChatGPT and Copilot data is thin. About two-thirds of Ford dealers have zero or one citation in each.
Where This Leaves Your Store
AI search isn't one place. It's at least six, and each one decides on its own whether to cite your store. The Ford stores that show up in most of them have one thing in common: strong organic search reach.
