OEM Deep Dive: How Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram Dealers Get Cited in AI Search
We studied all 2,336 CDJR dealer websites in the US. The dealers that AI search cites most are the ones that already rank in Google.

Ask Google or ChatGPT for a good Jeep dealer near you, and you get an answer, not a list of links. One or two stores get named. The rest are invisible to that shopper.
So every dealer should be asking one question. When a shopper in your city asks AI where to buy, is your store part of the answer?
To find out what earns that spot, we measured how often Google's AI Overviews and ChatGPT cite each CDJR dealer. Then we lined those counts up against 24 site-level factors to see what moves together. This is a spearman correlation coefficient. We kept individual dealers anonymous. Here is what the data showed.
Methodology
We started with 2,357 CDJR dealer listings, which resolved to 2,348 unique websites. We removed 12 that couldn't be measured fairly: sites that were suspended or likely closed, group sites covering several stores, sites that sell other brands alongside CDJR, and one store outside the 50 states. That left 2,336 dealer websites.
For each site, we pulled two kinds of data from Ahrefs in September 2026:
AI citations: how many times U.S. Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT answers linked to the dealer's site as a source. These counts come from the searches and questions Ahrefs tracks, not every AI answer ever given. AI Overviews are counted from tracked Google searches and ChatGPT from Ahrefs' question set, so compare patterns rather than exact totals.
Site factors: 24 measures of search performance, including ranking keywords by position, organic traffic, Domain Rating, backlinks, and paid search.
We measured how closely each factor moved with citation counts using Spearman correlation. Scores run from −1 to 1. A one means two things rise in near-perfect lockstep. A zero means they move independently. Every factor we measured came in positive. As a rough guide, 0.7 and up is strong, 0.4 to 0.7 is moderate, and below 0.4 is weak.
Finding #1 Most Dealers Appear. A Few Own the Results.
Google's AI Overviews cited 69% of CDJR dealer sites at least once. Showing up once is not the hard part. Showing up often is. When we sorted every dealer from most cited to least, the top 10% of sites held 67% of all AI Overview citations. The top 5% held 49%. Meanwhile, 73% of dealers had 10 citations or fewer, and nearly one in three had none at all.
The typical dealer has two citations. The average is 16. That gap tells the story: a small group of stores gets named again and again, and it pulls the average up for everyone else.
AI Overviews across 2,336 CDJR dealers | Result |
Cited at least once | 69% |
10 citations or fewer | 73% |
No citations | 31% |
50 or more citations | 9% |
Share of all citations held by the top 10% of dealers | 67% |
What this means for you: being present in AI search is not the same as being chosen by it. If your store has a handful of citations, there is real room between where you are and where the leaders in your market sit.
Finding #2 Great SEO = Great GEO
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your store cited in AI answers. We wanted to know what it has in common with search engine optimization (SEO). The answer: nearly everything that matters.
The number of keywords a CDJR dealer ranks for in Google tracked AI Overview citations at 0.83. That is a very strong relationship. Keywords on page one, in the top three, and on page two all followed close behind. Organic traffic (Ahrefs' estimate of monthly search visits) came in at 0.72.
Site factor | AI Overviews | ChatGPT |
Total ranking keywords | 0.83 | 0.49 |
Keywords ranking 4–10 | 0.81 | 0.47 |
Keywords ranking in the top 3 | 0.79 | 0.47 |
Keywords ranking 11–20 | 0.77 | 0.46 |
Organic traffic | 0.72 | 0.48 |
Domain Rating | 0.36 | 0.27 |
Referring domains | 0.30 | 0.23 |
Now the part most people get wrong. Domain Rating, the popular score for how authoritative a site is, tracked citations at 0.36, less than half as closely as ranking keywords. Backlinks (0.37) and referring domains (0.30) were just as weak.
The size of a website's link profile, the thing a dealer can't match against the big listing sites, matters far less than where its pages rank.
What this means for you: you don't need to become the biggest website in your market to win in AI search. You need pages that rank on the first page for the searches your shoppers make. AI Overviews lean on what already performs in Google. Rank there, and you feed the AI answer at the same time.
Finding #3 ChatGPT Is Pickier – but Points the Same Way
ChatGPT cites dealer websites far less often than Google does. It linked to 36% of CDJR dealers at least once. Most of those got one or two citations. Only one dealer in the whole network reached 50 citations.
That makes ChatGPT a harder room to get into. It also makes its patterns harder to measure, because most dealers sit at zero or one.
Even so, the direction held. The factors that tracked ChatGPT citations best were the same ones that led for Google: total ranking keywords (0.49), organic traffic (0.48), and page-one rankings (0.47). Domain Rating came in at 0.27, well behind rankings. The relationships are moderate, not strong, but none of them point anywhere new.
What this means for you: there is no separate playbook for ChatGPT yet. The same work that earns Google citations is the best signal we have for ChatGPT too.
Finding #4 What We Saw With Our Own Dealers
Fifteen of the 2,336 dealers in this study are current Honest Digital SEO clients, including two that started with us in the past two months. That is less than 1% of the network. Here is where they landed.
AI Overviews citations | Our 15 clients | All other dealers |
Median citations per dealer | 119 | 2 |
Cited at least once | 15 of 15 | 69% |
Top 10% of dealers by AI Overview citations | 11 of 15 | – |
Four of the 24 most-cited dealers in the network are current clients. Three more are former clients. Counting AI Overviews and ChatGPT together, the typical client had 130 citations. The typical dealer had three.
The gap holds beyond those two engines. We also checked four more: Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. Across all six, the typical client had 201 citations. The typical dealer had eight. Ten of our 15 clients were cited by all six engines, compared with one in five dealers overall.
We want to be careful here. These stores chose to invest in search, and many were strong before they worked with us. This comparison shows where they stand today. It does not prove what caused it.
What We Are Not Claiming
A few limits, stated plainly, because they change how you should read this.
This is a correlation study, not a controlled test. Ranking well tracks closely with AI citations, but this data alone can't prove one causes the other. Both may grow from the same root: a useful, well-built website.
AI results move. Citation counts shift from day to day. We looked at one moment, September 2026. Treat the direction as reliable and the exact figures as a snapshot.
ChatGPT data is thin. Most dealers have zero or one ChatGPT citation, which limits how strong any ChatGPT relationship can look.
Link data is crowded. Most dealer sites carry hundreds of links from dealer platforms and manufacturer networks. That flattens the differences between stores and likely weakens link-based factors.
The field is young. The tools for measuring AI search are improving, but nobody has this fully solved yet, us included.
None of that changes the through-line. Across 2,336 dealers and two AI engines, the stores AI recommends are overwhelmingly the stores that already rank.
Where This Leaves Your Store
The takeaway is not new, and it is not complicated. The dealers winning in AI search are the ones doing search fundamentals well. They rank on page one for the model, city, lease, finance, and service searches their shoppers make. They keep their content and business information clear and consistent. AI did not rewrite those rules. It raised the reward for following them. The same work that ranks your page now also feeds the answer a shopper sees before they ever click.
If you're not sure where your store stands, that is worth knowing before a competitor in your market locks in the spot. A Search-to-Sale Audit shows what shoppers find when they search for your store, your brands, and your models across Google, AI search, and local results – and what to fix first.
