One Store, 6 AIs: Where CDJR Dealers Show Up in AI Search
Showing up in one AI tool doesn't mean you show up in all of them. Across 2,336 CDJR dealer websites, only one in five was cited by all six major AI engines. Your store's organic search reach is the clearest predictor of how many you appear in.

Shoppers don't use just one AI. Some see Google's AI Overview at the top of a search. Some ask ChatGPT. Others use Gemini, Perplexity, or Microsoft Copilot. Each one decides on its own which dealer websites to cite.
So we checked all of them. For every CDJR dealer website we could verify in the U.S., we counted how often six AI engines cited it as a source.
How We Measured It
We started with ~2,400 CDJR dealer websites. We removed sites that were suspended or likely closed, group sites covering several stores, sites that sell other brands alongside CDJR, and one store outside the 50 states.
For each site, we pulled U.S. citation counts from Ahrefs in September 2026 for six AI engines:
Google AI Overviews
Google AI Mode
Gemini
Perplexity
Microsoft Copilot
ChatGPT
A citation means the AI linked to the dealer's website as a source in its answer. Ahrefs doesn't see every AI answer. It tracks a large sample of searches and questions for each engine, and our counts come from that sample. Google AI Overviews are counted from the Google searches Ahrefs tracks. The other five are counted from the questions Ahrefs asks them. Because each engine is sampled differently, compare the patterns, not the exact totals. AI results also change from day to day, so treat these numbers as a snapshot.
Finding #1 Each AI Plays by Its Own Rules
The six engines don't cite dealers at the same rate. Google's AI Overviews cited 69% of dealers at least once. ChatGPT cited 36%.
AI engine | Dealers cited at least once |
Google AI Overviews | 69% |
Perplexity | 66% |
Google AI Mode | 62% |
Gemini | 52% |
Microsoft Copilot | 43% |
ChatGPT | 36% |
Being cited by one LLM doesn't mean being cited by all of them. Only 20% of dealers showed up in all six LLMs. Another 15% showed up in none.
LLMs also differ in how much of your site they use. Among dealers that AI Overviews cite, the typical one has four different pages cited. For ChatGPT, it's one.
What this means for you: checking one AI tool doesn't tell you where your store stands. A store that looks strong in Google's AI can still be missing from ChatGPT. And the more pages on your site that answer real shopper questions, the more ways Google's AI has to cite you.
Finding #2 Google's 3 AIs Are One Family
If you're newer to AI search, here is a useful thing to know. Three of the six engines come from Google: AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Gemini. AI Overviews and AI Mode are built into Google Search, and Gemini can use it too.
Our data shows it. A dealer that does well in one of Google's AI tools usually does well in the other two. We measured this with Spearman correlation, where 1 means perfect agreement and 0 means none. As a rough guide, 0.7 and up is strong, 0.4 to 0.7 is moderate, and below 0.4 is weak. The three Google engines agree with each other at 0.74 to 0.80. ChatGPT and Copilot agree with them far less, at about 0.5.
Engine pair | How closely dealer citations agree |
AI Overviews and AI Mode | 0.80 |
AI Mode and Gemini | 0.79 |
AI Overviews and Gemini | 0.74 |
Google's 3 AIs and Copilot | 0.51–0.58 |
Google's 3 AIs and ChatGPT | 0.46–0.53 |
Ranges show the lowest and highest agreement with each of Google's three AIs.
That lines up with a second pattern. We compared each engine's citations with the number of keywords a dealer ranks for in Google. Google's own search features tracked those rankings most closely. ChatGPT and Copilot tracked them least.
AI engine | How closely citations track Google rankings |
Google AI Overviews | 0.83 |
Google AI Mode | 0.75 |
Gemini | 0.70 |
Perplexity | 0.69 |
Microsoft Copilot | 0.55 |
ChatGPT | 0.49 |
Perplexity isn't a Google product, but it tracked Google rankings almost as closely as Gemini did. ChatGPT's lower number is partly because it cites so few dealers. Nearly two out of three dealers had no ChatGPT citations at all, which makes any pattern harder to measure.
What this means for you: strong Google rankings carry you across most of AI search, not just Google's piece of it. ChatGPT is the one to watch, because it follows your rankings least.
Finding #3 Your Search Reach Decides How Many AIs Know You
We split the 2,336 dealers into four equal groups by their monthly organic search traffic, as estimated by Ahrefs. This is search traffic only, and Ahrefs' estimates usually run lower than what your own analytics show. Then we counted how many of the six AI engines cited each store.
Est. monthly organic search visits (Ahrefs) | AI engines citing the store (average, of 6) | Cited by all 6 | Cited by none |
Under 100 visits | 1.3 | 1% | 43% |
100–340 visits | 2.7 | 5% | 14% |
340–980 visits | 4.0 | 21% | 2% |
Over 980 visits | 5.2 | 53% | 0% |
Every step up in search traffic added more AI engines. Among the stores with the most traffic, not one was invisible to all six. Among the stores with the least, 43% were.
The gap is widest outside Google. In the lowest-traffic group, Gemini, Copilot, and ChatGPT each cited 16% of stores or fewer. In the highest-traffic group, ChatGPT cited 68%, and every other engine cited 78% or more.
Est. monthly organic search visits (Ahrefs) | AI Overviews | AI Mode | Perplexity | Gemini | Copilot | ChatGPT |
Under 100 visits | 31% | 26% | 31% | 16% | 13% | 11% |
100–340 visits | 64% | 49% | 60% | 41% | 29% | 25% |
340–980 visits | 86% | 79% | 79% | 64% | 51% | 41% |
Over 980 visits | 96% | 94% | 93% | 89% | 78% | 68% |
One caution. Stores with more search traffic tend to be larger, have more pages, and sit in bigger markets. This data shows that search reach and AI reach move together. It doesn't prove that one causes the other.
What this means for you: the work that grows your organic search traffic is the same work that puts your store in front of more AI engines. If Ahrefs estimates your store at fewer than about 340 search visits a month, there is a good chance most AI tools don't cite it yet.
What We Are Not Claiming
This is a correlation study, not a controlled test. It shows what moves together, not what causes what.
AI results move. Citation counts shift from day to day. We looked at one moment, September 2026.
ChatGPT and Copilot data is thin. Most dealers have zero or one citation in those engines, which limits how precise their numbers can be.
Six engines, not every engine. Our data provider tracks citations for these six. We did not measure Claude or Grok.
Where This Leaves Your Store
AI search isn't one place. It is six places, at least, and each one decides for itself whether your store is worth citing. The stores that show up in most of them share one thing: strong organic search reach.
If you're not sure which AIs know your store today, that is worth finding out. A Search-to-Sale Audit shows what shoppers find when they search for your store, your brands, and your models across Google, AI search, and local results – and what to fix first.
