OEM Deep Dive: How Volvo Dealers Get Cited in LLMs.

TLDR; The pattern that separates the dealers LLMs recommend from the ones it mentions once and forgets is not the one most people expect. Surprise: LLMs Recommend Dealers Who Already Rank in Search.

Ask ChatGPT or Google for a good local dealer, and you get an answer, not a page of links. One or two stores get named. The rest do not exist as far as that shopper is concerned. So the question every dealer should be asking is simple. When a shopper in your city asks AI for an option, is your dealership being included as the answer?

To find out what actually earns a dealer that spot, we studied one brand from top to bottom. We pulled AI Overview citation data for every U.S. Volvo dealer website.

In January 2026, we looked at how often each website was cited as a source in Google's AI Overviews, then lined those citation counts up against dozens of site-level factors to see what moved together and was most strongly correlated. We kept the individual dealers anonymous. Here is what the data showed.

Methodology: AI Overview citation data and site-level metrics were pulled from Ahrefs Site Explorer and Brand Radar for all 281 U.S. Volvo dealer domains, filtered to U.S. Google AI Overview citations in January 2026. Correlations are Spearman coefficients, computed on the ~280 domains with complete metrics. Individual dealers are anonymized. AI Overview results fluctuate over time, so citation counts may shift slightly between pulls.

#1 Almost Everyone Appears. A Few Dominate.

The good news for dealers is that AI Overviews are not a closed club. Nearly four out of five dealer sites, 79 percent, earned at least one AI Overview citation. Showing up in a baseline sense is not the hard part.

Owning the results is. When we sorted every dealer from most-cited to least, the top 10 percent of sites held 61 percent of all the citations. The top 5 percent held 40 percent. Meanwhile 68 percent of dealers had 10 citations or fewer, and one in five had none at all.

A small group of stores gets named again and again. Everyone else gets an occasional mention, if that.

What this means for you: being present in AI search is not the same as being chosen by it. If your store is one of the many with only a handful of citations, there is a gap worth closing between being mentioned and being an LLMs go-to recommendation.

#2 Great SEO = Great GEO.

This is the finding that surprised us, and it is one worth sitting with. We measured how closely each site factor tracked with citation counts. The tool for this is a correlation, a score from zero to one, where one means two things rise in near-perfect lockstep and zero means they move independently.

The factor that tracked citations most closely, by a wide margin, was the number of keywords a dealer ranked for in Google's top three positions. That scored 0.87, which is a very strong relationship.

The total organic keywords a site ranks for followed at 0.80.

The # of keywords ranking on page 2 was next at 0.78.

The number of keywords ranking on the bottom of page 1 followed at 0.74.

Total organic traffic came in at 0.69.

Now the part people get wrong. Domain Rating, the popular score for how authoritative a website is, barely tracked citations at all. It scored 0.26, near the bottom of the list. The size and muscle of a domain, the thing dealers cannot match against the big listing sites, was one of the weakest signals we measured.

What this means for you: you do not need to become the biggest, most authoritative website in your market to win in AI search. You need well-optimized pages that actually rank on the first page for the terms your shoppers use. AI Overviews lean heavily on what already performs in regular search. Rank there, and you feed the AI answer at the same time. These are searches that well-optimized dealers are capable of winning.

#3 Each LLM Behaves Differently.

AI search is not one place. We checked citations across five engines, and they do not agree with each other. Google's AI Overviews cited Volvo dealers the most, with 5,153 citations across the group.

ChatGPT reached the widest set of stores, naming 88 percent of dealers at least once, though usually in smaller numbers. Perplexity and Gemini sat in the middle. Microsoft Copilot barely engaged, citing fewer than a third of dealers at all.

What this means for you: do not pour everything into a single AI tool. That said, Google's AI Overviews carry the most citation volume, and they reward the fundamentals of SEO. For most dealers, strengthening what shows up in Google is the move that pays off across the widest surface.

What We Are Not Claiming.

A few limits, stated plainly, because they change how you should read this.

This is a correlation study, not a controlled test. Ranking on page one tracks closely with AI citations, but this data alone cannot prove one causes the other.

Both may grow from the same root, a genuinely useful, well-built website. AI Overviews also shift from day to day, and the citation counts can move slightly with each pull. We looked at one brand at one moment, January 2026, so treat the direction as reliable and the exact figures as a snapshot. And the whole field of measuring AI search is young. The tools are improving, but nobody has this fully solved yet, us included.

None of that changes the through-line. Across 281 dealers, the stores AI recommends are, overwhelmingly, the stores that already rank.

Where This Leaves Your Store.

The takeaway is not complicated, and it is not new. The dealers winning in AI search are the ones doing the search fundamentals well.

They rank on page one for the model, city, lease, finance, and service terms their shoppers actually type. They keep their content and business information clear and consistent. AI did not rewrite those rules. It raised the reward for following them, because now the same work that ranks your page also feeds the answer a shopper gets before they ever click.

If you are not sure where your store stands, that is worth knowing before a competitor locks in their GEO strategy. A Search-to-Sale Audit shows what shoppers find when they search your store, your brands, and your models across Google, AI search, and local results, and what to fix first.
